Thought Detective
Don't Believe Every Thought You Think
Our brains are constantly making quick judgments about the world around us. Sometimes those judgments are accurate, but other times they are based on fear, assumptions, or past experiences rather than facts. When we're anxious or overwhelmed, it's easy to mistake our thoughts for reality. The Thought Detective is a simple tool that helps you slow down, question your thinking, and look for evidence before believing every thought that crosses your mind.
Instead of asking, "Is this thought true?" ask yourself, "What evidence do I have?" Learning to investigate your thoughts can reduce anxiety, improve decision-making, and help you respond to situations with greater confidence and clarity. Research shows that challenging unhelpful thoughts is a core part of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), one of the most effective treatments for anxiety and depression (Beck, 2020).
Become a Thought Detective
1. What happened?
2. What am I telling myself?
3. What evidence supports this thought?
4. What evidence challenges this thought?
5. What's a more balanced thought?
Remember
Thoughts are not facts.
Just because you think something doesn't mean it's true. The goal isn't to think positively—it's to think accurately.
